Since we were not prepared to hike (no hiking boots, 2 quarts of water between us, only light jackets, no survival gear, and no Hiking GPS) we decided to just go for a little ways and return to the jeep. So off we went, starting at about 11am. The profile of the hike was a 2 mile hike downhill to the river (never start a hike downhill), cross the river, uphill for 2 miles, flat terrain for 2 miles, and downhill for 1.5 miles (but we didn't know the profile or the distance at the time).
 
After the first mile we felt good so we pressed on (what would you expect going downhill). It wasn't too much longer and we were at the river. Still feeling energetic, we crossed the river and started up the other side, now uphill. After a while I was tired and ready to return, but we decided to go on to the top of the next ridge. You already know what you find at the top of the ridge, another ridge. Not to be denied the view from the top of the very top ridge, we pressed on, now really tired. Once we crested the top ridge, it really was time to go back, I was beat, but now the terrain leveled off and the walk was easy, and we had already come so far. Putting two good decisions to turn back aside, we hiked on. Now at the end of the sixth mile, I was very fatigued and needed to go back, but now we started down hill. You guessed it, we pressed on. Finally, after 7.5 miles, we were at the formations, beautiful to say the least. But the pleasure of the sights was quickly overshadowed by reality, the reality of the situation we let ourselves get into. We were both exhausted, no more water, legs and feet aching, no matches, not dressed for cold, 3pm, and facing a 7.5 mile hike out, of which 3.5 miles were up hill. I remember telling my wife; you know we are in trouble don't you? I really didn't know if I could hike another 7.5 miles, or not (although I didn't tell her that).

So, after a few pictures and a short rest, we started back out. I tried to remain enthusiastic and be the strong leader and encourager. It was quite slow going up that first 1.5 miles and I was sure glad when we leveled off for the next two. Finally, downhill to the river, but I was surprised at how slow we were going, even down hill. Every step hurt, thirsty, and cold. At last, the river. But it was here that the hardest and worst of the pain began, a 2 mile hike, up hill, following an already grueling 13 miles. It was here that I wanted to just stop and give up. If I had brought matches for a fire and warmth, I would have stopped for the night. I would have drank river water and worried about diarrhea later. After all, that's what they make Cipro for, right?
